Snake plant care
The snake plant is close to indestructible if you remember one rule: it would rather be forgotten than fussed over. Its stiff, upright leaves store water, so it goes weeks between drinks and tolerates dim rooms.
Also called Sansevieria, mother-in-law’s tongue.
Light
Anything from low light to direct sun. Growth is fastest in bright, indirect light; in a dark corner it survives but barely grows.
Watering
Water only when the soil is completely dry all the way down. Soak thoroughly, then let it drain. Overwatering is by far the main way snake plants die.
Soil, feeding and repotting
Soil: Fast-draining cactus/succulent mix, or potting mix with a third perlite or grit. Pot with a drainage hole.
Feeding: Diluted balanced or cactus fertiliser once or twice in spring and summer. None in winter.
Repotting: Every 2–4 years, when roots crack or distort the pot. It likes being snug.
Propagation
Divide the rhizome with a clean knife, or root leaf cuttings in water or soil (variegated edges are lost from leaf cuttings).
Problems and fixes

How often should I water a snake plant?
Typically every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer and every 4–6 weeks in winter, but only when the soil is dry to the bottom of the pot.
Do snake plants clean the air?
The famous 1989 NASA study measured sealed chambers. Later reviews (Cummings & Waring, 2019) found you would need hundreds of plants per room to match normal ventilation, so enjoy it for looks, not air purification.
Can a snake plant live in a bathroom with no window?
Not long term. It tolerates low light but needs some natural or grow-light light to survive.
