ZZ plant care
The ZZ plant has glossy, waxy leaflets that look almost artificial. Its underground rhizomes are water tanks, which makes it one of the best plants for dim rooms and forgetful owners.
Light
Low to bright indirect light. It tolerates offices with only fluorescent light. Direct afternoon sun can scorch it.
Watering
Water only when the soil is dry throughout. The potato-like rhizomes store water, so it can go 2–4 weeks. Overwatering causes yellowing and rot.
Soil, feeding and repotting
Soil: Free-draining potting mix with perlite or cactus mix.
Feeding: Diluted balanced fertiliser two or three times in the growing season.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years when rhizomes crowd the pot.
Propagation
Divide rhizomes, or root individual leaflets in soil (slow: months).
Problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Yellowing leaves and soft stems | Overwatering. | Let it dry out fully; check rhizomes for rot. |
| Leaning, stretched stems | Low light. | Move closer to a window and rotate the pot. |
| Leaflets dropping | Severe drought or sudden cold. | Water thoroughly and keep it away from draughts. |
